Lucknow History
The history of Lucknow says that it was founded by Lakshmana, the youngest brother of Lord Rama. Hence it is said that the city once belonged to the Suryavanshi Dynasty and was placed near the Gomti river. Then it was known as Lakshmanpur. In due course of time, its name got changed to Lucknow. But it was only in the 18th century, the city came into prominence for the first time. Thanks to the Mughal emperors who appointed Nawabs for the smooth functioning of the province during 1720! It reached its pinnacle of glory during the rule of the powerful dynasty of Nawabs which etched a new script in its historical journey. It was Saadat Khan a powerful name of the Nawab dynasty who ruled over it durng 18th century inaugurating Lucknow's journey to fame and prosperity. The rule of the fourth Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula added new feathers. Lucknow prospered like never before spreading its wings of fame in the field of poetry, dance, music and other avenues.
During the rule of British, the city served as the administrative capital. This period was marked by the atrocities of the Britishers resulting in gruesome incidents and bloodshed. One cannot forget the Sepoy mutiny of 1857 - a befitting reply to the barbarity of the British! However, the bad memories of the British period were soon forgotten when Lucknow became the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Since then, the city has been trying her best to add more pages of glory .
